Rutgers University Chemistry and Chemical Biology
A dynamic gateway to research
LocationPiscataway, New Jersey
CertificationDesigned to LEED Gold
As one of the nation's premier public research universities, Rutgers boasts a world class chemistry program that has made a substantive impact, not just on scholarship, but on everyday life with discoveries in areas ranging from health to energy to the environment. And as one of the top recipients of federal funding for chemistry R&D in the country for over a decade, there is an expectation that the department will continue to innovate, question, and explore.
The new chemistry and chemical biology building is more than a department home. Designed to support cutting-edge research, the facility is also a new dynamic gateway for the north end of campus. The site's generous pedestrian throughway follows the form's length before passing beneath a transparent bridge, emerging to connect with the neighboring student center and dining hall. A LEED Gold design embodies commitment to a sustainable future. And looking beyond the university community, the facility hosts collaborative partnerships with the many pharmaceutical and chemical industries in the surrounding region, benefiting economies locally and across the country.
During a programming meeting with two principal investigators who currently reside in separate buildings,
it became evident how sharing space within the new CCB facility will positively impact their work on a day-to-day
basis. Enabling collaboration has been one of the key objectives throughout the design of the project,
and it was thrilling to see the potential from their perspective.
