Outdated building envelopes can compromise building performance and, in a healthcare environment, negatively impact clinical function.

Flad's Pat Spoden will participate in a panel presentation at the Wagdy Anis Symposium and share his experience with upgrading existing building enclosures. The panel will also feature David Barto, the VP of facilities at Penn State Health. Flad collaborated with Penn State Health to implement a high-performance window system and exterior wall upgrades at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to support patient care in the renovated Medical Intensive Care Unit. The project resulted in improved patient care areas and patient comfort while providing energy savings and reducing operating costs.

In addition, the panel will include engineering firms Studio NYL and WSP as well as curtain wall manufacturer FreMarq. From full system replacements to targeted reglazing strategies, they will explore how upgrades have improved energy efficiency, comfort, and operational outcomes in commercial buildings. Attendees will learn how each project team evaluated retrofit options, addressed challenges, and achieved measurable results, offering practical guidance for extending the life and performance of aging facades.
