Torrey Heights Development Earns SARA California Honor Award
Torrey Heights by Breakthrough has received a Design Honor Award from the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) California Chapter.
Flad designed the Torrey Heights development, which features three thoughtfully designed, state-of-the-art scientific workplace buildings and an amenity building totaling 520,000 square feet. The San Diego life science campus opened in 2024, offering top-tier leasable space for biotechnology firms such as current anchor tenants Becton Dickinson and Pfizer.
Providing exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding natural landscape from every point on the site, Torrey Heights works in tandem with its environment to express its own character. Its steeply graded, glass fiber-reinforced, concrete window panels establish a dynamic, tessellated signature envelope. The coffered façade echoes the site’s layered geologic formations, appearing to change color and texture as the angle of sunlight shifts throughout the day and year.
