Torrey Heights Façade Design Wins Architizer A+Award

Torrey Heights by Breakthrough is this year's Architizer A+Award Popular Choice Winner for the +Façades category. The A+Awards program features entries from over 80 countries, and the Popular Choice Winner is selected by Architizer's voting public.

Flad partnered with developer Breakthrough Properties to design the award-winning life science campus in San Diego. The campus is comprised of three thoughtfully designed scientific workplace buildings and an amenity building, totaling 520,000 square feet. The facility's unique coffered façade echoes the site's layered geologic formations with steeply graded window panels. The custom panels are made of glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC), which establish a dynamic, tessellated signature envelope.

The neutral-colored GFRC panels serve as a backdrop to the environment, enabling the façade to change color and texture with the sunlight at different times of the day, presenting unmatched applications on all four façades throughout the day and year. As day turns to night, strategically placed design lighting accentuates depth and articulation while illuminating the main public mesa.
