LSU Health Shreveport Medical Research Facility

Reimagined for research

The LSU Health Shreveport Foundation is reimagining the former Sears property at Mall St. Vincent as a state-of-the-art research and clinical facility, transforming an underutilized retail site into a catalyst for innovation, economic development, and community revitalization.

Located minutes from the LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) campus, the 18-acre site is taking shape as a high-performance health sciences environment for next-generation translational research. The adaptive reuse delivers flexible open laboratory neighborhoods, vivarium and research support space, and collaborative environments for approximately 40 principal investigators. These spaces strengthen LSUHS's focus on cancer and cardiovascular research while supporting the recruitment and retention of world-class scientific talent.

At the heart of the design is the Science Lantern concept, a striking architectural expression that reimagines the former retail building as a transparent hub for discovery. Strategic interventions introduce daylight, vertical connectivity, and a new entry sequence organized around a central courtyard, creating a welcoming environment that fosters collaboration and wellness.

The project also anticipates future ambulatory care integration with Ochsner LSU Health System, enhancing clinical partnerships and expanding community access. The surrounding site is transformed into a cohesive campus landscape with shaded outdoor spaces, pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, and improved arrival experiences. A resilient infrastructure system, including a new central energy plant, supports long-term performance and adaptability.

The Health Sciences Building establishes the framework for LSUHS's future as a national leader in scientific discovery, strengthening its mission and creating lasting impact for the Shreveport community.
