Duke University
Murray Building Renovation
Positioning for the future
Facility upgrades across campus position Duke University for a sustainable future and support their strategic vision. Part of these campus upgrades, the Murray Building Renovation includes an exterior façade replacement and an interior refresh for an athletic recovery room and a vestibule.
Originally constructed in 1985, the project supports Duke's sustainability initiatives by extending the building life. Flad created scenarios for façade and material reconfiguration, working within the existing structural framework. Located adjacent to the football stadium, the highly visible upgrade matches the style of the nearby Scott Family Pavilion, strengthening the character of the Athletics Campus and acting as a symbol for home game attendees.
The upgraded exterior façade consists of brick and metal, restoring the Murray Building and fulfilling Duke's climate commitment with energy-efficient windows to improve insulation, reducing heat and air conditioning costs. Mechanical system improvements support building longevity and efficiency.
The renovated facility supports teaching and learning, enhances sustainability initiatives, and modernizes the campus while honoring Duke's historical legacy.
