Organization The building is organized along a two-story linear atrium which parallels the central courtyard of the new research park. The linear organization layers circulation, office, and laboratories, providing interaction along the perimeter and secure research space within. Lab Space Laboratory space and high-end equipment is shared and available to support diverse projects ranging from cancer and other complex diseases to technology development and creation of new feedstocks and catalysts for biofuels production. Six large, open areas are configured into high-, medium-, and low-hood intensity labs and instrument labs for imaging and mass spectrometry. Their modular design accommodates quick changes in research initiatives and project sizes. Expansion Flad has also designed a 29,000-square-foot expansion of the BBC. The Multidisciplinary Cancer Research Facility will extend the BBC's capabilities, housing research that explores innovative animal models of disease, development of new therapeutics, and in-vivo imaging.

Fostering collaboration

CERTIFICATION
Designed to 2 Green Globes

A cornerstone of Purdue's Discovery Park, the Bindley Bioscience Center serves as the functional anchor of this new science complex. This biomedical engineering facility is a catalyst for researchers in Purdue's life sciences and engineering disciplines, allowing them to collaborate on solutions for biological and medical problems. The overall building design supports this through social interaction spaces, which are conducive to spontaneous conversations and collaboration among researchers.

Laboratory space is modularly configured to accommodate the dynamic nature of the research projects within the center. With six large, flexible labs, the building is considered an “engine” for harvesting research innovations.

quote

"The center's potential for both education and research lay in its unusual organization, offering opportunities for multidisciplinary research not to be found elsewhere. What makes it unique is that our students can work together with scientists, engineers, and specialists in informatics. Many disciplines will work together. Our students will have opportunities to study not only with their major professor, but also with faculty in related fields."
