Connection and collaboration

Seeking to enhance patient access and care delivery on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus, the Medical College of Wisconsin has undertaken development of a new professional office building project.

Consisting of enclosed offices, modular workstations, conferencing space, break areas, and informal collaboration spaces, the new eight-story, 310,000-square-foot building will allow more than 1,400 physicians, nurse practitioners, researchers and healthcare staff to be relocated into one dedicated central workplace, freeing up clinical space within the hospital. The move helps MCW accomplish four key objectives: bring clinicians together for clinical, research, educational, and community engagement endeavors; create a modern workplace fostering innovation, collaboration, and collegiality; attract and retain the best students, faculty, and staff; and support clinical growth while preserving space for future expansion on the MRMC campus.

The POB will be physically connected to the existing Medical Education and Health Research Center buildings to the north at multiple levels, and connected to the Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratory Building to the south by an enclosed elevated skywalk over Connell Avenue. A physical and symbolic bridge joining the clinical, academic, and research missions of MCW, the building creates efficiencies through proximity and adjacencies; provides flexible workspaces and shared resources among departments and programs; and incorporates technology connecting staff and faculty.

Additional renovations and relocations will be undertaken within the existing Medical Education Building and Health Research Center to optimize adjacencies in the backfill of vacated space and to support additional program growth, including a new MCW School of Pharmacy. When completed, the project will have demonstrated the institution's vitality and helped reposition MCW’s identity as a health sciences university.
