UCSD Multidisciplinary Life Sciences Building Wins Vitruvian Awards Honors
The University of California, San Diego Multidisciplinary Life Sciences Building has earned an honorable mention in the Unbuilt Façade category from the Façade Techtonics Vitruvian Honors & Awards program.
The multi-use facility will be the first building on the UC San Diego campus to bridge health science research with biological science research and teaching. The 200,000-square-foot facility includes scientific neighborhoods composed of cross-organizational collaborative faculty, providing interaction opportunities.
The modern exterior design further advances the bold and unique architecture that is emblematic of the UC San Diego campus. The glass façade features sculpted, perforated fins that act as a shading device and light shelf, and the upper floors of the six-level building are offset, creating the dynamic appearance of rotated volumes. Building on local design expression, the facility uses a UCSD-specific mix of type 1L concrete, which serves as both a structural and aesthetic element that celebrates the honesty of materials.
