The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) has earned a 2025 Silicon Valley Business Journal Structures Award in the Office/R&D category. Honorees were chosen through an independent editorial review, with selections based entirely on their merits, achievements, and contributions to their organizations and local community.
Flad designed MBARI's new Instrumentation Integration and Testing Facility, which opened this past spring. The 31,900-square-foot engineering lab expands MBARI's capacity for developing cutting-edge technology to support biological, chemical, and physical science research in deep ocean environments. Spaces include flexible research and engineering laboratories, instrument development and preparation, and research platform engineering and assembly – all serving the core function of MBARI. Located adjacent to MBARI's existing research buildings in Moss Landing, California, it also features office support spaces offering waterfront views.
