Shared Innovation Center

A shared scientific platform seeking top talent

With the goal of attracting top talent to accelerate the drug development process and production of life-changing therapies, this confidential client and Fortune 500 company partnered with Flad for the interior tenant fit-out of approximately 62,000 square feet of leased space in South San Francisco's booming biopharma sector.

The Shared Innovation Center serves as an industry-wide pioneer, utilizing a novel co-working laboratory concept to foster and speed the discovery of innovative medicines through collaboration with small, early-stage biotech companies throughout the Bay Area. All tenants have direct access to the client's leading scientists, executives, regulatory experts, in addition to a state-of-the-art facility with cutting-edge research equipment and technology.

Spanning two floors, the facility carefully balances modern office space and amenities with advanced laboratory and research functions to create a comprehensive scientific workplace environment. The interior features a dedicated social hub, large and small formal conference rooms, informal collaboration zones, an all-hands area, and well-appointed office spaces. Open workstations and shared informal gathering spaces foster enhanced communication and interaction while focus booths and enclosed offices allow for privacy and quiet, independent work. The modular laboratory spaces can flex into larger or smaller spaces and are fully customizable to adapt with changing tenants and evolving research needs.

Inspired by the biological diversity and richness of the San Francisco Bay, the interior architecture and design evokes an overall look and feel reminiscent of a flourishing underwater ecosystem. This concept, which deeply resonated with the client, recalls the shapes of oysters, shrimps, and other shellfish, as well as the feeling and tones of swaying grasses in the Bay's murky waters.

A complementary color palette utilizes neutral, cool tones throughout the interior to create a calming, tranquil environment for enhanced mood and productivity. Bursts of blue and red add contemporary appeal while providing a natural connection to the overarching aquatic and marine-inspired theme.

Through this new collaborative research concept, tenants can leverage the extensive capabilities and resources of the client, providing the means and tools necessary to rapidly translate innovations from concept to reality, all within a state-of-the-art scientific workplace setting.
