The University of Mississippi Medical Center's (UMMC's) mission is to create a campus that integrates and unifies healthcare, education, research, and training. The Translational Research Center (TRC) is the first building within this appointed research district and enables the advancement of study across a broad base of neurosciences and cancer research.
The two initial programs housed in the TRC will support Mind Center research and Incubator research. The MIND Center will be a major research and clinical care initiative dedicated to finding the causes of, and treatments for, Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia. This Center will support translational research and includes an exam facility for cognitively impaired participants.
Through the support of a federal NIST grant, transfer incubator space for start-up companies is available as they work to convert discoveries into viable healthcare solutions. In response, the laboratories are designed to provide a flexible environment that can easily adapt to suit the needs of a variety of programs as research conducted in the facility changes over time, including both wet and dry research. Space is included for technical training, graduate research and education, and continuing education. Outdoor gathering areas will create important connection points to future research buildings, parking, and lodging facilities while also enhancing the researchers' daily activities.
