Global Infectious Disease Laboratories Fit-out
Advancing global public health expertise
Research undertaken by the UW-Madison Global Infectious Disease Laboratory (GIDL) focuses on fighting viruses and other major pathogens impacting human health. Scientists here are committed to performing world-class research and solving hard problems, turning ideas into new knowledge that meaningfully contributes to global public health.
Located on the top floor of the Element Labs building in University Research Park, this 23,000-square-foot fit-out provides modern laboratory and office space designed to empower the GIDL’s work and the highly productive partnerships the group regularly pursues on both local projects and with collaborators around the world. Revealing a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, full-height exterior glazing around the entire perimeter admits an abundance of natural light that the design purposefully embraces throughout the interior environments.
A variety of containment laboratories with distinct separation provide heightened safety and support research flexibility, allowing projects that are studying different pathogens to proceed simultaneously. Outside the labs, office and amenity spaces support diverse computation, collaboration, and wellness needs. Thoughtfully designed acoustic and lighting elements create a library-style open office environment suited for elevated levels of concentration and user comfort while a continuum of spaces for tasks from individual focus to interactive engagement support the staff throughout their workday.
