Modern facilities supporting compassionate care

Supporting the well-being of animal clients for over 40 years, the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at NC State delivers life-saving clinical care as well as groundbreaking research – benefiting advances in education and industry across the state and beyond. Continuing in this tradition of world-class service, an expansion totaling 80,000 square feet of new facilities focused on equine and large animal health will allow veterinary experts to continue providing the highest level of care for these patients.

The new hospital expansion clads the north and west facades of the CVM’s existing large animal hospital with a welcoming design that improves client wayfinding and animal intake while separating species. Additionally, a new signature equine sports medicine arena is positioned at the site’s north entrance, providing a visual gateway into the CVM campus.

These facilities replace outdated critical care and sports medicine functions and include inpatient, outpatient, emergency, orthopedics, surgery, and ICU services, as well as clinical teaching spaces. An addition for farm animals includes specialized handling equipment and treatment areas for small and large ruminants, reducing animal stress and increasing student safety. Renovated research laboratories improve One Health research initiatives. The new spaces are flexible and adaptable to allow for incorporation of future technology.

Consideration of both client and animal comfort is central in the design. Traffic flow throughout the complex accommodates space for horse and stock trailer access, drop-off, and parking, with passive and active wayfinding elements that improve circulation across the site. Diagnostic and treatment spaces honor a horse’s needs with visual connection to other animals and access to outdoor space and natural light – helping ease stress as they receive care.
