As lab planners and programmers, we are advocates for researchers throughout the design process. The most challenging but most rewarding aspect of the planning process is translating researchers’ needs into physical space that allows them to conduct world-class research.

Jim Cox

Science Planner

From an early age, Jim had an interest in science and the built environment. Being both an architect and a lab planner fuses these two interests together. For more than two decades, Jim has worked hand in hand with researchers and research institutions from all over the U.S. to program and plan laboratories that enhance and support critical research missions, and during that time he has learned that no two research laboratories are created alike. He is most interested in spending time with researchers — learning about the science they are engaged in, asking them about what limits research in their existing space, and understanding how they utilize space — in order to provide relevant planning solutions that address research missions.
