The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) has recognized Flad’s design of the Lee Health Fort Myers Hospital as a featured projected in the annual Architecture for Health Showcase. Flad collaborated with Lee Health to master plan the 53-acre campus, including the centrally located 644,000-square-foot acute care hospital, which is scheduled to open in 2028.
Envisioned as a hospital of the future, the Lee Health Fort Myers Hospital supports accessible, high-quality care while remaining flexible to respond to evolving community needs. To support the growing community, Lee Health worked with Flad to define necessary services and right-size the program and space.
Seamlessly connecting interior and exterior spaces, particularly along the curved main concourse linking emergency services, the main entry and the adjacent medical office building, the design supports wellness and comfort. A full-height glass curtainwall introduces daylight, reinforces intuitive wayfinding, and creates a welcoming sense of openness.
Hurricane Ian’s devastation on the area underscored the importance of resilience when planning the new healthcare campus. The design incorporates elevated floors and parking, along with enhanced water systems to maintain care during prolonged disruptions. The result is a future-ready hospital that establishes a new benchmark for patient-centered, adaptable healthcare environments.
