Academic and research institutions are setting increasingly ambitious goals for carbon neutrality. At the same time, state building codes and regulations are increasingly mandating energy efficiency, energy transparency, and embodied carbon reduction. To comply with these mandates, owners are looking closely at how to design new lab facilities with the lowest possible carbon profile.

Unlike lab building energy efficiency and operational carbon, lab building embodied carbon is not well understood. Lab buildings may have twice as much embodied carbon per square foot or more compared to a typical office building, due to their intensive structure; finishes; and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. What can we do about it?

At the I2SL Annual Conference, authors of the new Best Practices Guide on Laboratory Building Embodied Carbon, including Flad’s Zac Heaps, will share an overview of the guide. This new embodied carbon guide will inform lab owners, operators, builders, architects, and engineers about embodied carbon and how to analyze, compare, and reduce it. The guide includes detailed strategies for quantifying and reducing embodied carbon in architectural, structural, and MEP systems. Presenters will offer attendees key takeaways and real-world examples of embodied carbon reductions through a variety of strategies and system types.
