Clemson Dedicates New College of Veterinary Medicine
Clemson University celebrated the opening of South Carolina’s first veterinary college with a dedication ceremony for the new Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine on Oct. 16.
Flad collaborated with architect of record LS3P to design the new campus. Located three miles from the university’s main campus, the complex consists of eight buildings, including a central pavilion. The CVM campus offers 248,000 square feet of space for veterinary medicine education and research with ample opportunities for student collaboration and engagement.
Purposefully arranged around a central courtyard, the campus buildings create a sense of place for users and visitors. At the same time, the walkable campus maintains a connection to the natural environment. Integrated with the adjacent Clemson Experimental Forest, the design preserves many mature trees within the campus courtyard.
The campus is anchored by the Quattlebaum Hub, a vibrant student center featuring classrooms as well as spaces for quiet studying and student collaboration.
Flad led siting decisions and exterior design for the campus as well as the planning and design of the Research Building, the Central Utility Plant, and the Andy Quattlebaum Pavilion.
Additional campus buildings include the Clinical Teaching Building, which houses several labs and the Peeler College of Veterinary Medicine Community Clinic; the Ambulatory Service Building; the Equine Teaching Building; and the Farm Animal Teaching Building.
Clemson’s CVM academic program takes a hands-on approach for students. On-site lecture- and laboratory-based instruction are augmented with visits to off-site animal research stations. In their final year, students will go through clinical rotations with veterinary practices and partner institutions throughout the state.
The Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine officially welcomed its inaugural class of 80 veterinary students with the start of the fall semester in August.
